Escape to Italy

PREVIOUS TASTINGS ARCHIVE – SEPTEMBER 2025

Italy, the land of ‘La Dolce Vita,’ is not just a country; it’s a living tapestry of vibrant cultures, breathtaking scenery, and, of course, fabulous wines. The world’s biggest wine producer has extraordinary diversity, boasting 350 different grape varieties and a fascinating geography, from the snow-capped Alps, down to the baking heat of Sicily, and from the rolling Cypress-covered hills of Chianti to the truffle country of Piedmont. It’s a glorious hunting ground for the wine lover.

The Wines

Map of regions being tastedOur tasting will pass through six different appellations and taste some of Italy’s most iconic wines, from Barolo to Lambrusco.

Week One

In our first session we begin in Emilia Romagna with its most famous wine, Lambrusco. Forget the poor wines of the 70s however: this is a dry, gently effervescent example and it is made with 100% Lambrusco Sorbara, considered to be the the finest of the various Lambrusco grape varieties. Next, the Marche, and its most typical white variety, Verdicchio. Ours comes from a classic family-run estate, and is a crisp and zesty, fruit-filled example. Finally at the southern point of this tasting, a red Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Again, the absolute classic of the region, it is an intense bramble and spice example from 50-year-old vines, and aged in French oak.

Week Two

Running north to south, our selection begins in Veneto, with a Bardolino from the eastern shores of Lake Garda. Specialising in lighter reds, the cherry-coloured wine is made from three indigenous varieties. Next up by complete contrast, one of Italy’s icons: Barolo. Our 2020 vintage example is made from Nebbiolo of course, and spent three years ageing in large oak casks. Also from Piedmont, another speciality of the Asti region: Moscato. In this case a luscious dessert wine, fully sweet and aged two years in oak barrels – note we have the 2017 vintage with that extra maturity.

The public price for this case of six wines is £84.45 including delivery. Exclusively for this tasting, that has been discounted to £75 including delivery to UK mainland addresses.
